First House

Chinese restaurants are a dime a dozen in Yangon, but smart, upmarket Chinese restaurants aren’t, which is what makes First House more appealing than most. Located in a colonial mansion at prestigious No.1 Inya Road, we were instantly struck by the impressively proportioned interior and the peaceful ambiance - We felt like we had the place to ourselves.

First house specialise in Hunan and Sichuan cuisine, so expect plenty of heat. The fish here is good…we mean really good. Check out the steamed sea bass with lemon (18,000 Kyats). It will feed two with ease, and was cooked to perfection in a tangy lemon and herb sauce, which complemented the meaty fish just right. The mapo tofu (6,000 Kyats) with its tasty ground pork and spicy chilli and bean-based sauce was good, but for deep Sichuan spiciness, we would recommend the unbelievably moreish dry fried string beans (5,000 Kyats) – green beans are fried in rock salt, Sichuan peppercorns, dried chilli and garlic. It is a simple, and utterly delicious dish.

At First House, expect well-prepared regional Chinese cuisine, attentive service, a relaxing atmosphere, and to top it all off, no holes in tablecloths. Totally upmarket.
